Raku and Kiln Building Weekend Workshop - 11th & 12th October
Raku and Kiln Building
All things Raku!
A very comprehensive course in the technique that will cover:
Raku Clays
We will explore different clays on this course that are suitable for Raku firing and we will be creating with strong grogged clays and paper clay as well as porcelain slip to make a wide range of pieces in this dramatic and beautiful process. Raku pieces can be sculptural as well as decoratively functional.
Firing
We will look at how to load and fire a Raku kiln, how to gauge the right temperature, how to unload the kiln and how to use combustibles to create different effects.
It is very important to know how to safely fire a Raku kiln, we will look at how to safely heat the kiln and unload the hot kiln covering how to use gas burners, PPE, good working practices with Raku kilns.
Glazing
You will learn how to make your own Raku glazes (saving a small fortune on pre-made glazes) you will create a good palette of colours as well as different metallic and iridescent effects.
Build your own kiln!
There is an option to build a simple Raku kiln. These metal dustbin style kilns are much cheaper than buying a kiln and are brilliant for firing Raku and you can take it home with you and start firing at home.
*This part of the course is optional, if you don't want to build your own kiln you can watch a kiln being built while carrying on creating and firing, you will still learn how it's done and can do it at a later stage at home.
