HANDBUILDING CERAMICS!

This one day course is a fabulous introduction to all things hand building with clay.

The course will start with an introduction to a wide variety of clays that are suitable for hand building, we will explore paperclay, porcelain, grogged hand building clays and look at their different qualities and finishes.

You will then be shown how to build pieces such as vessels and sculpture using the coiling building method. During the course of the day you will also have the opportunity to create pieces using slab building and press moulding methods.

We will then look at decorative techniques using coloured liquid clay (slips) you can choose to colour and decorate your pieces using the coloured ceramic slips which come in a range of colours from vibrant reds, oranges and yellows to muted greys and whites, and also rich blues, greens and turquoise. 

This course is an ideal course beginners and those with some previous experience, suited for people wishing to carry on working with clay at home and for those wanting to create without the limitations of wheel work.

£115 - Including all materials, firings and refreshments. 

*You get to keep all your beautiful creations, please allow 2 - 3 weeks after the course for your work to be fired, everything you make will need to dry out throughly then fired twice in the kiln, once to 1000 degrees, then the pieces are carefully glazed and refired to stoneware 1240-1260 degrees for maximum durability and aesthetics.

Course is Saturday 16th May, 10am till 4pm. Refreshments, tea & coffee, snacks are provided throughout the day. We take a break for lunch and you can either bring a packed lunch or go into Frome/Mells/Nunney or one of the many lovely cafes or pubs. Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and you won't mind getting a bit of clay on…it does all wash off however :) There is plenty of parking round the back the pottery studio please follow the parking signs. Do bring an apron if you have one, although there are spares at the pottery, a phone for photos and/or notebook is useful too.
